There is one vacancy in the County Counsel's Office to be filled at the Deputy County Counsel I or II level depending on qualifications.
The candidate selected will be placed at the appropriate level, depending on their background and experience, at the discretion of the appointing authority.
The salary ranges for the Deputy County Counsel I through Deputy County Counsel II classification levels are set forth below.
Future vacancies for this position may be filled from the eligible list to be established.
The expected life of the eligible list is six months.
SALARY Level I: $35.
59 - $43.
44 Hourly; $74,027.
20 - $90,355.
20 Annually Level II: $41.
33 - $50.
43 Hourly; $85,966.
40 - $104,894.
40 Annually MANAGEMENT BENEFITS This position includes a management benefit package including CalPERS retirement (click the benefits tab to determine plan/tier placement); County paid PPO insurance premium for medical, dental, vision and chiropractic insurance coverage for the employee and their eligible dependents; onsite health center for employees and eligible dependents on County health insurance; $40,000 term life/accident insurance an additional 80 hours of management leave annually, which can be cashed out and fully paid.
ABOUT THE COUNTY COUNSEL'S OFFICE & ITS' RESPONSIBILITIES The County Counsel’s office serves as the civil attorney for the Kings County government, its departments, boards and commissions, and other special districts and government agencies.
This provides a unique opportunity to study and practice a wide range of law and topics such as: advice regarding powers, functions, jurisdiction, procedures and operations; opinions involving liability, condemnation, elections, police powers, land use, planning, zoning, labor, personnel, probate, special assessments, county property, human services, child dependency, behavioral health, Public Guardian, contracts, open meeting laws, public safety.
It requires the drafting of a variety of documents such as resolutions, ordinances, opinions, briefs, contracts, leases and so forth.
The attorneys of the County Counsel's office are expected to show initiative, demonstrate dedication to their jobs, work well in a team, and communicate effectively, whether in writing or verbally, with a wide variety of audiences.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Deputy County Counsel I is the trainee or entry level in the classification series, utilized for attorneys with no prior experience in the licensed practice of civil law.
Incumbents at this level are assigned, under close supervision, a variety of less difficult routine legal civil assignments occurring within the County Counsel's office.
They are expected to advance to the II level when the minimum qualifications have been met for the higher class and satisfactory performance of more difficult and responsible legal work has been demonstrated.
The Deputy County Counsel II classification is utilized for attorneys with prior experience in the licensed practice of civil law.
Incumbents at this level are expected to represent and advise County departments, schools and special districts on civil issues and cases of average difficulty.
Work is performed exercising independent judgment and initiative, under the supervision of a Deputy County Counsel IV, the Assistant County Counsel or the County Counsel.

ALL LEVELS Education: Possession of active, valid membership in the California State Bar is evidence of sufficient education for this classification.
License: Possession of a valid, appropriate California driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Level I Experience: No previous experience as a licensed attorney is required.
Level II Experience: One year of experience equivalent to a Deputy County Counsel I in Kings County; OR two years of experience practicing as a licensed attorney.
