KINGS COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION EDUCATIONAL SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER/ SUBSTITUTE EDUCATIONAL SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER JOB SUMMARY Under the supervision of the department manager, assist certificated staff in the instruction, supervision, training and physical care of deaf and hard of hearing students; provide sign language interpretation; provide interpreting in all educational environments including but not limited to playground, classroom, IEP’s, cafeteria, etc.
; responsibly perform a variety of instructional services and clerical support activities within a well-defined framework of policies, procedures and objectives; use sound judgment and initiative in working and providing physical care with deaf and hard of hearing students; and do other related work as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Proper English usage, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation; Sign Language(s) such as ASL or SEE and interpreting skills including sign-to-vice, voice-to- voice sign, and transliteration ability; Registered Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Ethics; Basic concepts of child growth, development and behavior characteristics, particularly pertaining to the special needs and limitations of deaf or hard of hearing individuals; Standard hygiene practices and procedures; General classroom procedures, purposes, goals and methods of education; Positive discipline and behavior management techniques.
Ability to: Demonstrate an understanding, patient, respectful and receptive attitude toward special needs students of varied age groups; Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with children and adults contacted in the course of work; Understand, carry out and communicate oral and written directions; Learn to assist with monitoring FM systems and checking hearing aids; Assist with feeding, personal hygiene, and other special and medical needs of students; Respond appropriately in emergency/unforeseen situations; Be flexible and receptive to change; Attend in-service training, conferences and meetings, as assigned, with compensation if overtime if required; Maintain the highest level of confidentiality in all matters relating to students.
Education and Experience: Any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the knowledge and abilities listed above.
High School Diploma, equivalent, or certificate of completion is required.
License, Certificate and Testing Requirements: Valid certificate of competency from a California Department of Education approved organization at Level 4.

Possess a valid California driver license and maintain insurability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES Perform specialized duties requiring the application of and proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English-based sign systems; Interpret mainstream and self-contained classroom lectures, group discussions, movies, plays, tapes, records, guest speakers, and general classroom instruction and extra-curricular activities utilizing simultaneous interpreting methods; Interpret informal conversations, telephone calls, and other verbal communications for assigned deaf and hard of hearing students; communicating intensity/feelings of originator; Translate simultaneously from sign language used by deaf and hard of hearing persons into spoken English which can be understood by hearing persons; Assist in the creation, preparation, ordering, distribution and presentation of materials and supplies to obtain the educational objectives of the students; Alert teacher and appropriate staff to the special needs, progress and behavior of students; Assist in maintaining the classroom as a sanitary, safe, orderly, attractive and positive learning environment; Assist students with feeding, personal hygiene, grooming functions, toileting, and other self help skills, which may require changing diapers and clothes, lifting and positioning students on changing tables, and assisting students on and off of the bus; Immediately recognize, report and correct unsafe conditions; Assure the health and safety of students, providing supervision in classroom and non-classroom school settings, at various school functions, and with bus loading the unloading; Tutor and assist deaf and hard of hearing students, individually or in groups, in academic or elective subjects; attend both mainstream and self-contained classrooms, and assist teachers in self-contained classrooms with instruction as assigned; Interpret and translate for assigned deaf and hard of hearing students at or during extra curricular activities/events as directed/arranged by department manager; Deliver and hook-up video tape recorders and closed captioned machines; Research specific terminology relevant to various curricula as appropriate to assignment; Develop appropriate signs to communicate classroom material/lectures as necessary; Prepare, design, and develop instructional materials to assist deaf and hard of hearing students in a learning environment under the direction of a certificated teacher; Assist students in learning/practicing appropriate living/social skills and behaviors such as safety procedures, communication skills, independence, and decision making necessary for “mainstreaming”; Interpret and translate for deaf and hard of hearing staff and parents during meetings; Consult with integrated classroom teachers to determine where students may need special help and provide the help through tutoring; Perform other duties as assigned.
